Massimiliano Allegri: AC Milan will be back next season

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has congratulated Juventus for winning the Scudetto this season under Antonio Conte.

The former Cagliari boss argued that his side were not inferior to the title winners, but instead underlined injuries and bad luck as the reason for failing to keep hold of the title.

Speaking to Sky Sport following Milan's 4-2 loss to Inter in the derby, Allegri was quick to praise his title rivals: "[Juventus] deserved it. They won a compelling championship between two teams that earned a lot of points."

Turning his attention to his own team, Allegri encouraged his players to raise their performances from years past.

"I think that with respect to last year, to win this year we would have needed even more points and I believe that it will be like this in the years to come as well," he said.

"We were not inferior, despite unfortunate incidents and the many injuries. Next year we will give our all to return to the top.

"This year we finished second but next year, we could be first. Who knows?"

Allegri also insisted that the derby was not a total disaster and explained: "It's difficult to understand where we've gone wrong with respect to last year.

"Today we could've won 3-2, but they scored the penalty and then [Inter full-back] Maicon scored a super goal. What is there to say?

"It was an entertaining derby. Last year [former Inter striker Samuel] Eto'o lost the derby after missing a goal from zero metres out and then we won 3-0. Calcio is like this."

The derby defeat means that Milan's final game of the season is all but irrelevant, as the side will mathematically finish second no matter how they perform against Novara on Sunday.
